Downtown Phoenix shoot & interview with As You Wish Photography

Close Encounters of the down town Phoenix kind

Close Encounters of the down town Phoenix kind

Hello! I love this picture. Silly and odd images are always more captivating to me vs. “pretty”.  Look closely at it and comment if you think you have figured out how we shot it!

In this series of photos with Brandy of As You Wish Photograhy (http://www.modelmayhem.com/531521  …there is also a link to myspace on MM page) we had to use what was available literally because the car show that we planned to shoot at didn’t happen. Literally! There was one car that showed up late to an event that was supposed to have 30-60 cars.  So we ended up down town Phoenix and shot locations as we found them. Enjoy the interview and the pictures! If you would like to book Brandy to capture your next event, please contact her through MM or the myspace link.

1. Why photography when it comes to self expression and release of creativity?  Well, I can’t draw.  I can’t sing.  I don’t play a musical instrument.  I can’t dance and I’m not a very convincing actress.  So photography it is, right?

2. Who’s work do you admire?  I admire anyone whose images captivate me over and over .  I love Ellen von Unwerth, Annie Liebovitz, Andy Hartmark, and anyone else who really loves what they do and their images make me feel something, even it I hate it.. it made me feel SOMETHING and that’s what I strive to do as well.

3. Where does inspiration come from?  Inspiration?  I’d have to say there is no one direct source.  Sounds, music, color, movies, paintings, buildings, animals, models ideas, other photographers..  anything that makes me think of how I can do a shoot to incorporate an image in my head.

4. What are your favorite types of shoots/scenes setups? Indoors or outdoors?  I prefer outdoors mostly, the challenge of the right lighting and the right angle with daily life whizzing by and sometimes getting in the way.  However, if the image in my head calls for indoors, I will go to great lengths to make the indoor shot work.

5. Tell me the story of how you got started in photography?  I have grown up with cameras.  My dad has always had a camera with him. When I was 6 years old, he took me to the San Diego Zoo and Universal Studios. He put a disposable camera in my hand.  One of the first pictures I ever took was on the “Jaws” boat ride.  When the shark jumped out of the water at us, I screamed (as any 6 year old would) the gum fell out of my mouth into the mechanical shark, and I snapped the picture.  I’ve pretty much always had a camera in my hand ever since.

6. What’s next for you in photography?  I really don’t know.  I do it because I love it.  If someone wanted to pay me for it, that would be great!  But until then I’m going to keep improving my craft, and challenging myself to make better and better images.

7.  If you could name any way/shape/form/person/set up/scene/wardrobe for the “ultimate dream come true shoot”, what would it be?  That’s really hard to say.  I wouldn’t want to settle on just one.  I’d love to have the unlimited funds and resources of something like America’s Next Top Model, to be able to just go anywhere and have an elaborate set, makeup, wardrobe and beautiful models at my whim to make whatever image pops into my head come alive.

7a. Now what needs to happen to make that come true?  Um, I’d need to be discovered by someone who wants to give me said funds and resources?  Haha, I don’t know.  I love what I do and I’m going to keep doing it whether anyone else does or not.

I hope you enjoyed the interview and the pictures. They are some of my favorites! Now, stay tuned…because my Fair story from the Figure 8 racing will  be up soon and I have pictures of course!

I’m taking a few more photoshoot bookings for November and December, but not booking anything past the 15th and won’t set up the new year until, well, it’s the new year.

Thanks for visiting and I love your comments! Keep’ em coming!
